Today we'll be reviewing a netbook, the Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3, and a very full-featured laptop, the Dell Studio s15z-2249CPN. If you want to experience portable computing but can't decide which features are most important, perhaps this look at opposite ends of the spectrum will help you set your priorities in order.
Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 Netbook
The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3 is a netbook with a 10.1-inch display. It provides decent performance and portability for those looking for something smaller than a laptop. Its price is a bit high at $369, setting it at a starting point that is more than some competing netbooks. The IdeaPad S10-3 comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.
The IdeaPad S10-3 features a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N450 processor with 512 KB of L2 cache. The N450 processor is part of a more recent line of processors that have seen their way into netbooks. The performance provided by the S10-3 is decent among its competitors in the netbook category. You can perform normal everyday tasks like Internet surfing, instant messaging, multimedia viewing, and even some light gaming.
That being said, do not expect to be able to run many applications at once without some serious slowdown. It is a netbook after all, and it is not meant to be a powerhouse by any means. If you use it for the common tasks listed, though, you should be fine. For extra multitasking help, there is 1 GB of DDR2 SDRAM.
Graphics are supported by an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 chip. A 160 GB hard drive is on board to give you decent storage space for your files. Battery life with the S10-3 is pretty decent. You will find some other netbooks with more battery stamina, but the S10-3 does manage to give you plenty of hours of usage with its six-cell battery. You can tote it around as you travel without having to worry too much about finding an electrical outlet. Windows 7 Starter is the operating system that comes pre-installed, which is a nice upgrade from the Windows XP OS found on many previously released netbooks.
