Laptop Review: HP Mini and Compaq Presario

Today we'll review two very different systems, the HP Mini 210-1199DX and the Compaq Presario CQ62-215DX. The first offers style that stands out from the pack, while the second offers decent performance for those on a budget.

The HP Mini 210-1199DX is a 10.1-inch netbook that can be found in retail stores at a fixed configuration. This feminine-themed netbook offers similar performance and features to many other netbooks on the market, at a bit of a higher price.  The 210-1199DX sells for $379.99 and comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor.

The Mini 210-1199DX comes with a 1.66 GHz Intel Atom N450 processor with 512 KB of L2 cache. This N450 processor is found in many other netbooks on the market, and gives the 210-1199DX comparable performance. The netbook should suffice for common tasks like Internet browsing, instant messaging, and some multimedia. Do not expect a powerhouse, as it is just a netbook, and you should keep your tasks simple. For added multitasking power, there is 1 GB of DDR3 SDRAM.

The netbook's graphics are supported by an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3150 chip. A decent amount of storage comes in the form of a 250 GB hard drive. The hard drive is faster than most found on other netbooks, and runs at 7,200 rpm as opposed to 5,400.

The included six-cell battery is said to offer over nine hours of usage when fully charged. That is quite impressive, and makes the 210-1199DX a solid choice for a portable computing companion. The fact that the N450 processor is energy efficient also helps add to the impressive battery life. As far as the operating system goes, Microsoft Windows 7 Starter Edition comes pre-installed.

Additional features of the Mini 210-1199DX are highlighted by 802.11n Wi-Fi that allows you to connect to the fastest wireless networks available. Fans of video chatting will enjoy the integrated webcam and microphone that can be used with programs such as Skype. For quick data transfers with other digital devices, there is a 5-in-1 media reader on board. The reader supports various formats, such as SD cards, Memory Sticks, and more. Unfortunately, there is no DVD drive, but that is to be expected with a netbook due to its smaller size.

The look of the Mini 210-1199DX is what makes it stand apart from the competition. That being said, it will likely only attract those of the female demographic. It comes with an HP Imprint 3D finish on its lid and touch pad that is a pink plaid pattern. Obviously, males or professionals will stay away from this.  The keyboard and the areas around it are all pink as well.

As one would expect from a netbook, the 210-1199DX is very compact, measuring 10.6 inches wide by 6.9 inches deep by 1.1 inches thick. It weighs just three pounds, making it easy to tote around. Despite its small size, the netbook does feel solidly built. Its 10.1-inch display has an attractive edge-to-edge glass design and a 1,024 x 600 resolution that produces vibrant graphics.

The 210-1199DX's pink keyboard is quite impressive and solid for a netbook. The keys are flat, wide, and very comfortable to type with. The touch pad is impressive as well. Its plaid pink pattern is a nice aesthetic highlight, and it is one of the bigger touch pads you will find on a netbook. Multi-touch gestures are supported for easier use.

Rounding out the 210-1199DX's design is its connectivity, which is standard. The left side features a VGA port, a USB port, and a microphone jack. The right side features the aforementioned media card reader, as well as two more USB ports.

Simply put, the HP Mini 210-1199DX is a solid netbook.  It is, however, a bit overpriced, and its pink color scheme will obviously scare some potential buyers away. Still, if you are looking for some extra design flair and solid overall performance and features, the 210-1199DX is a good choice.
