IBM ThinkPad X31 Review - Benchmarking: WinRAR, LAME, POV-Ray
(Page 7 of 8 )
WinRAR
WinRAR was used to decompress and recompress the Linux 2.4.25 kernel source code from tar/bzip2 format into 150 MB of source code and then recompress it into a RAR archive.

The ThinkPad gets killed here in the recompress test, taking more than 3 times the amount of time the SFF PC takes and 4 times the time of the desktop PC. Again, design considerations of the ThinkPad show why.
LAME MP3 Encoding
Using the dBPowerAMP frontend, The Crystal Method's Legion of Boom CD was encoded into MP3 from WAV source files. Default settings were used.

In this test, the ThinkPad falls more than a full minute behind the Gigabyte GOPC and 75 seconds behind a Pentium 4 desktop. This test is interesting -- while its doubtful that the X31 will be used for much encoding, this test may be relevant for those who use the X31 for multimedia purposes.
POV-Ray
The Persistence of Vision Ray Tracer (POV-Ray) has a math intensive ray-tracing benchmark that ships with it. Version 3.6 was used.

As expected, the ThinkPad finished behind the desktop system. Here, the ThinkPad is 5 minutes behind the desktop, echoing the patterns shown by the previous tests.
