HP Pavilion dv6-1375dx and Sony Vaio VGN-NW270F/S - HP Design

The look of the HP Pavilion dv6-1375dx is great if you love flashy things. I think the design is geared more towards a younger demographic, rather than someone older who might bring their laptop into an office for work. It comes in an HP Imprint finish that is basically some groupings of funky bubble-like designs that dot parts of the laptop's exterior.

The overall finish is an espresso color that closely resembles black. Make sure to keep a cloth handy, as you will need it to rub off all the fingerprints that are inevitable due to the glossy finish that coats almost the entire body. The laptop is portable, measuring 14.9 inches wide by 10.2 inches deep by 1.6 inches thick and weighing 6.3 pounds.

The 15.6-inch widescreen HD display has a resolution of 1,366x768 and an aspect ratio of 16:9. It has a glossy finish that may show some small glare problems at times, but it produces sharp and colorful graphics overall. When used in conjunction with the DVD drive, it makes for a solid movie-viewing device. The built-in Altec Lansing speakers add to the experience by providing good volume and clear sound. You also get a tiny remote control that comes in handy when you want to lay back and watch movies.

The laptop's keyboard is a bit lacking in terms of the size of its keys, making it a bit uncomfortable to type with. While it does include a number pad, this addition seems to have taken away size from the other keys, and it might have been better off without it. Like the rest of the Pavilion dv6-1375dx, the keys have a glossy finish that can get slippery, and the same goes for the glossy touchpad, which doesn't provide much in the form of traction.

Rounding out the design are the solid connectivity options, which include a VGA port, a docking port, an Ethernet port, a HDMI port, two USB ports, one of which is also an eSATA port, the media card reader on the left side, and two more USB ports on the right side of the laptop.

Although the HP Pavilion dv6-1375dx does offer decent performance and is good for viewing movies, its high price is hard to justify. This is especially true when you can find other similar mid-range laptops for less, and its keyboard and touchpad design could be an annoyance to many. It may appeal to some with its unique outer shell, but those seeking a laptop for casual use are better off shopping around.
