HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx and the HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx Laptops - Connectivity and Design

As far as connectivity goes, there is no HDMI port on the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx, although there are three USB 2.0 ports, a VGA port, a 5-in-1 media reader, ExpressCard/34 slot, Ethernet, and microphone and headphone jacks. There is also a built-in webcam and microphone, a fingerprint reader, as well as a mini remote to control media on the laptop and a stylus to use on the touch screen. Both the stylus and remote can be stored within slots on the laptop when not in use.

The software on the TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is overkill in the form of such programs as Quicken and NetZero. You only get a 60 day trial of Microsoft Office 2007, and a full version of the basic Microsoft Works.

The HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is quite unique in its style, with its varied imprint patterns dotting its dark gray exterior. It weighs in at a hefty 4.8 pounds, considering its smaller stature, and measures 12 inches wide by 8.8 inches deep by 1.5 inches thick when closed.

The tx2-1275dx has a 12.1 inch touch display with 1,280x800 resolution. The touch-screen display is the highlight of the tx2-1275dx's design, hence the name TouchSmart, and you can either use your finger or the included stylus to take notes on the display or perform other tasks.

The screen incorporates multi-touch functionality via N-Trig's DuoSense technology. Similar to an iPhone, you can use your fingers on the screen to zoom in or out on photos by either spreading them apart or bringing them close together, just as an example. This adds another dimension to the computing experience and is pretty fun to use.

The display also sits on a hinge, meaning you can rotate it independent of the keyboard to view movies or photos or position it for easier touch screen use. Speaking of the keyboard, it is quite roomy and comfortable to use despite being on a smaller chassis.

The HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx is more style over substance. The multi-touch functionality and rotating display are fun to use, but the poor battery life and slow performance may lead you to look elsewhere.
