HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx and the HP TouchSmart tx2-1275dx Laptops - Performance and Design

Perhaps the best feature of the HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx is its 9-cell lithium battery. You can use the dv3-2155mx for up to seven hours on one charge with minimal usage, or around six hours while using multimedia-related features. This exceeds most other competitors when it comes to battery life. The long lasting battery on the dv3-2155mx could, on its own, be reason enough for some to purchase it.

There are plenty of connectivity options on the dv3-2155mx, including HDMI, VGA, two USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA/USB combo port, an ExpressCard/34 slot, a 5-in-1 media reader, the aforementioned Ethernet, as well as jacks for microphones and headphones. The dv3-2155mx comes with an integrated webcam and microphone, which is a plus for those who like to chat frequently and keep in touch with friends and family. There is also a small HP mobile remote, stored in the ExpressCard/34 slot, that you can use to control audio and video on the laptop from a distance.

The software that comes on the dv3-2155mx is pretty basic and includes Microsoft Works, Cyberlink DVD Suite, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Unfortunately, you only get a 60 day trial version of Microsoft Office 2007, which could turn off many students thinking of buying the laptop.

The highlight of the design of the HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx is its rather artistic nature. The laptop has an indigo-blue color accented by a floral and dragon pattern throughout its lid, touch pad, and wrist rest. The pattern is certainly interesting and gives the computer some flair lacking in competitor models. If you are more of a reserved person though, this may not tickle your fancy as much, as its looks like something you would find on one of those Affliction or Ed Hardy shirts that are a rage all of a sudden.

The dv3-2155mx is compact in size. It weighs 4.9 pounds and measures 12.9 inches wide by 8.7 inches deep by 1.4 inches thick when closed. A down side to the powerful battery on the dv3-2155mx is the fact that it sticks out about inch from the bottom, making it a bit uncomfortable to use while on your lap.

The dv3-2155mx has a glossy 13.3 inch display with 1,366x786 resolution that does a good job of reducing glare and reflection. It's 16:9 aspect ratio is also great for watching DVDs and other video content. Like the display, the rest of the dv3-2155mx has a glossy finish, including the keyboard and touchpad. While it looks good, it does tend to make them feel a bit slippery, particularly if you have sweaty hands like I do.

The HP Pavilion dv3-2155mx is a solid choice for a laptop. Its compact size and excellent battery life make it ideal for use on the run. The fashion-conscious will like its unique aesthetic qualities, and videophiles will definitely appreciate its 16:9 display.
