HP Pavilion Elite HPE-112y and the Dell Inspiron i580-5108NBC - HP Features and Design

The extra features of the Pavilion Elite HPE-112y are highlighted by its Blu-ray drive. The inclusion of this upgraded DVD drive allows you to watch high quality DVDs, making the desktop notable as an entertainment device as well. It also has a DVD burner installed.

There is integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi on board so you can connect to the fastest available wireless networks. If you need to transfer data quickly from other devices, you can do so using the desktop's 15-in-1 media reader. The media reader supports a wide variety of formats, such as Memory Sticks, SD cards, and many more.

If you like to get hands-on with your computers and perform upgrades, the Elite HPE-112y offers some room to do so. The 8 GB of RAM can be upgraded to 16 GB. There is also room for an extra hard drive if you need additional storage besides the 1 TB that comes standard. You also have some expansion options with two vacant 1x PCI Express slots.

The look of the Pavilion Elite HPE-112y is similar to that of other mainstream desktop towers, with its black exterior and glossy front panel. The front panel also has some chrome accents dotting its surface. The tower still looks good, though, and will fit in nicely in any room or office. The tower measures 15.8 inches tall by 16.9 inches deep by 7.1 inches wide.

Near the top of the front panel is the aforementioned media card reader, as well as two USB ports for easy connectivity. Beneath that you will find the optical and the Blu-ray drives. You also get microphone and headphone jacks on the front.

The back panel features a VGA port, a DVI port, and a HDMI port, giving you plenty of video connection options, which is great to have considering the desktop's Blu-ray drive. You also get an Ethernet port, six more USB ports, a FireWire port, and various audio connections.

Yes, the HP Pavilion Elite HPE-112y is a bit pricey. However, for its price tag, you do get solid performance, a Blu-ray drive, good connectivity, and a full feature set. If a Blu-ray drive is not a must for you, you may want to shop around, as there are competing desktops that cost a bit less but still provide better performance than, and similar features to, the Elite HPE-112y.
