Today we'll be reviewing two workaday desktops, the HP Pavilion Elite e9220y and the Dell Inspiron i545s-3055NBK. While neither of them can be called powerhouses, both provide solid enough performance to handle the basic computing needs of many if not most computer users.
The HP Pavilion Elite E9220y is a fixed configuration desktop that can be found in retail stores. It sports a nice exterior but its interior is a bit lacking, especially when you consider its price as compared to the competition. The Pavilion Elite E9220y is available for around $800. It comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor, and technical support is available online or via a 24-7 toll-free line.
The Pavilion Elite E9220y comes with a 2.6 GHz AMD Phenom II X4 910 quad-core processor with 2 MB of L2 cache that gives it decent overall performance. Even so, it is unimpressive in terms of speed when compared to some other retail desktops on the market that are also lower in price. Still, you can count on the Elite E9220y for your casual everyday computing tasks like surfing the Internet, viewing multimedia, and some light gaming.
The desktop also has 8 GB of DDR3 SDRAM to help you multitask and keep several applications open at once. You get plenty of storage for all of your important files thanks to a 1 TB hard drive. For graphics, an ATI Radeon HD 4350 card is on board. A nice added touch is the inclusion of 802.11n Wi-Fi so you can connect to the fastest available wireless networks.
The Elite E9220y can also be used to listen to and burn CDs, as well as for viewing DVDs with its integrated DVD drive. The DVD drive supports LightScribe technology, so you can create custom graphic labels for your new CDs after you burn them. As with many computers now on the market, the Elite E9220y has Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit pre-installed.
