Gateway SX2840-01 and the HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y - HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y desktop

The HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y is a desktop that can be found at retail stores in a fixed configuration. It offers satisfactory performance when compared with other budget desktops, but it's lacking in its features and connectivity. You can purchase the Slimline s5310y for about $510. It comes with a one-year warranty and technical support via HP's website or their 24-7 toll-free line.

The Slimline s5310y's fixed configuration has a 3 GHz AMD Athlon II 250 dual-core processor. This processor churns out decent overall performance, although not quite as good as some competitors. Still, you can count on using the s5310y for your everyday tasks like web browsing, checking email, instant messaging, document editing, and multimedia viewing without too many problems.

Some multitasking help comes in the form of 4 GB of DDR3 SDRAM. Adequate storage space is available via the system's 640 GB hard drive. For graphics, you get an Nvidia GeForce 6150 SE card. As with many other systems out on the market now, you get Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit pre-installed as the operating system.

Extra features on the s5310y are pretty limited. You get a DVD burner for watching movies and listening to CDs. The burner supports LightScribe technology that allows you to create custom labels for newly-created CDs. A 6-in-1 media reader is included for fast transfers of data with other digital devices. Unfortunately, you do not get integrated Wi-Fi, so you will have to upgrade to get that luxury.

Speaking of upgrades, the Slimline s5310y does have some options you can tweak once you have the system in your possession. The options are on the light side, however. There are two vacant 1x PCI Express Card slots as well as one 16x slot, giving you room for the absent wireless networking card as well as a possible 3D graphics card. There is no room for a second hard drive, so the 640 GB drive will have to suffice. The same goes for the RAM, as you are stuck with a maximum of the 4 GB already installed.
