Gateway SX2840-01 and the HP Pavilion Slimline s5310y - Gateway Features and Design

Other features on the Gateway SX2840-01 are somewhat limited. The most glaring omission is that of not having integrated Wi-Fi. A DVD drive is included for entertainment value, and its HDMI connection is great for when you want to hook the desktop up to your HDTV and stream video or DVDs. There is also a media card reader for data transfer with other digital devices.

Unlike some other smaller desktops, the SX2840-01 does offer you the ability to perform some upgrades yourself. There is room to upgrade the RAM up to 8 GB. More room exists for upgrades, such as the necessary wireless networking card, with a 1x PCI Express card slot as well as a 16x PCI slot. There is no room for an extra hard drive, so luckily the 1 TB drive is of the heavy capacity variety.

The small size of the SX2840-01 is a major plus, as you can fit it into tight areas and other places without taking up too much space. The tower measures just 10.5 inches tall by 12.5 inches deep by 4 inches wide and weighs 12 pounds. The color scheme is the typical black seen on many towers with a glossy black finish on the front panel and some chrome accents for an added touch. At the top of the tower is a recessed bay that is useful when you want to store a digital device that you may be charging or transferring data with.

The front panel houses the DVD drive, which is revealed once you open a small enclosure. Connectivity options start within an enclosure that sits on the bottom of the front panel, where you will find the media card reader, a FireWire port, microphone and headphone jacks, and five USB ports. The back panel houses the aforementioned HDMI port, a VGA port, an eSATA port, keyboard and mouse ports, four more USB ports, an Ethernet port, and audio ports.

As far as budget desktops go, the Gateway SX2840-01 is hard to top. Its performance is great and its design allows it to fit almost anywhere. The lack of integrated Wi-Fi is a downer, but connectivity is very good, and you can also upgrade many of the components if you wish. Best of all is its price, which is very reasonable for such a versatile machine.
