Gateway One Desktop PC Rivals the iMac - Design

    Design

The design of the Gateway One is one of its greatest assets. This PC consists of a 19 inch LCD monitor, wireless keyboard, wireless mouse, and a power brick. As I mentioned earlier, this PC only has one cable which attaches from the monitor to the power brick.

The 19 inch monitor is much thinner than the iMac, although smaller in screen size. It's a little disappointing that the One doesn't offer a larger screen size in the higher-end model. Maybe Gateway will offer it in future models, but for now you are stuck with a 19 inch display. The display is beautiful with its piano-black finish, which gives it a very sleek and sexy look. The dimensions of the monitor are 17.4 inches tall by 18 inches wide by 3.5 inches thick (at its thickest point near the base), and the entire unit weighs about 22 pounds.

The monitor houses speakers in the bottom-front of the display, which are hidden nicely, but it may also be the reason that they don't perform very well. On the right side of the display there is a DVD/CD burner. On the opposite side of the unit there are 3 USB ports, a 6-pin FireWire port, a 5-in-1 media card reader (SD, MMC, XD, MS, and MS Pro), and a headphone jack. On top of the computer there is a removable 1.3 megapixel web cam.

The wireless keyboard sports the same type of plexiglass finish as the monitor does. It looks very nice, and it seems like it would be more durable than a typical keyboard. The mouse is a new design that is quite innovative. Instead of having a right and left mouse button, this mouse has a built-in sensor that senses right and left clicks as well as scrolling up and down.

The last major component of the One's design is the power brick. The power brick is about the size of a shoe box, and it is used to connect the one required cable to the computer. This power brick also has 4 USB ports on it, which brings the total number of USB ports up to 7. It also has a digital audio output for connecting an external sound system.

Gateway has also included a TV tuner with the One, which plugs in via USB 2.0. It's a little disappointing to not have the tuner built into the monitor, but it can still be hidden out of sight if you connect it to one of the power brick's USB ports and hide the tuner. Gateway includes a remote control for watching TV.
