Dell Studio s1745-3691MBU and Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980

These days, many people don't even bother with desktops, using laptops as their only computers. They still expect the performance of a full-fledged desktop in the smaller package, however. If this describes you, you might want to look at the two laptops on review today: the Dell Studio s1745-3691MBU and the Toshiba Satellite P505-S8980.

    Dell Studio s1745-3691MBU laptop

The Dell Studio s1745-3691MBU is a mainstream 17.3-inch laptop that you can find in your local retail stores. Solid performance and a well-rounded feature set make it an attractive buy for those in need of a new laptop for common usage. The Studio s1745-3691MBU is available for $729.99. It comes with a one-year warranty on parts and labor as well as technical support from Dell's website or through their 24-7 toll-free line.

The Studio s1745-3691MBU is powered by a 2.2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 processor with 2 MB of L2 cache. This dual-core processor gives the laptop good overall performance when compared to other mainstream competitors. You should have no problems while performing common tasks like Internet browsing, instant messaging, viewing multimedia, and even some gaming.

Multitasking is not an issue thanks to 4 GB of RAM. You have plenty of storage room for all of your important files with a 500 GB hard drive. Graphics are supported by an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD card. Despite its large size, the Studio s1745-3691MBU has surprisingly good battery life, as you can expect a little over five hours of usage when its six-cell battery is fully charged. As with many newer laptops, you get Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit pre-installed as the operating system.

Extra features beyond the core hardware components include 802.11n Wi-Fi so you can connect to even the fastest wireless networks available. The onboard DVD drive lets you listen to and burn CDs as well as watch your favorite DVDs. It must be said, though, that a Blu-ray drive would have been a nice upgrade, especially considering the Studio s1745-3691MBU's large display.

An integrated 2-megapixel webcam and microphone are an added plus for those who wish to take part in video chats with friends. Data transfer with other digital devices is quite easy as well, with the laptop's 8-in-1 digital media reader. The reader supports various formats such as Memory Sticks, SD cards, and more.
