Asus G60VX-RBBX05 and HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx - Asus Design

The look of the Asus G60VX-RBBX05 is one that should appeal to many gaming fanatics, but probably won't appease those looking for a professionally-themed laptop. Its lid has a glossy dark blue finish with an interesting pattern in the middle that looks as if the laptop's logo is bursting out of the lid. You also get a strong hint that it is a gaming laptop from the label “Asus Republic of Gamers” near the hinge. The G60VX-RBBX05 is a bit clunky, weighing 7.3 pounds and measuring 14.8 inches wide by 10.4 inches deep by 1.6 inches thick.

Once opened, its 16-inch widescreen LED 720p display with 1,366x768 resolution and a glossy black bezel is revealed. Although the display doesn't carry the ultimate distinction of being 1080p as found in some competitors, it does provide solid graphics that should be satisfactory for your gaming needs, movie watching, and the like. You also get four integrated audio speakers to help give 3D sound and add to the overall gaming experience.

The backlit keyboard is a nice touch, and adds both functionality and some style to the computer. The keys are large and elevated to provide a better feel and control while you are in the heat of battle. A separate number pad is included as well, and above the keyboard is a row of additional dedicated controls. The touch pad is also adequate in size, responsive, and supports multi-touch gestures. An attractive glossy black finish surrounds the keyboard and touch pad.

Connectivity options on the G60VX-RBBX05 are decent. The left side features a VGA port; two USB ports, one of which doubles as an eSATA port; a FireWire port; an HDMI port; and the aforementioned media card reader. The right side features headphone and microphone jacks, two more USB ports, and the DVD drive.

The Asus G60VX-RBBX05 is a worthy choice as a gaming laptop for hobbyists on a budget. Its performance is competitive, despite its poor battery life, and its graphics card is ideal for gaming. Added features like the integrated webcam are a plus, and the design, while bulky, should still appeal to gaming fans. Best of all, the entire package comes in at below the $1,000 mark.
