Asus G60VX-RBBX05 and HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx

Today we'll be taking a look at two laptops that offer solid, even outstanding performance without quite breaking the budget. Both the Asus G60VX-RBBX05 and the HP Pavilion dv7-3085dx can be found in retail stores. Which one you choose to buy depends on how you plan to use all that power.

The Asus G60VX-RBBX05 is a 16-inch gaming laptop found in retail stores that targets gamers on a budget. It sports a solid feature set and good overall performance along with a unique design. You can find the G60VX-RBBX05 for $899.99. It comes with a two-year warranty on parts and labor, and technical support is available online or via telephone.

The Asus G60VX-RBBX05's performance is driven by a 2.13 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo P7450 processor with 3 MB of L2 cache. The dual cores of this processor allow you to run different applications at the same time without much lag, although the performance is not quite up to that of some competing laptops that sport Intel's latest Core i7 processor. Still, you should be able to perform all of your daily computing tasks easily, including gaming. Some multitasking power is added with the inclusion of 4 GB of DDR2 SDRAM. You get moderate storage capacity in the form of a 320 GB hard drive.

Probably the laptop's most impressive core component is its Nvidia GeForce GTX 260M graphics card, which shells out solid performance when gaming and helps the G60VX-RBBX05 rightfully earn its distinction as a laptop suitable for those with an affliction for video gaming as a hobby.

Unfortunately, one area where the G60VX-RBBX05 is severely lacking is in its battery life. Do not expect much portability, as you only get barely above 90 minutes of freedom away from an electrical outlet with this laptop. This pales in comparison to other competitors on the market. Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Edition 64-bit is the operating system that comes pre-installed.

Beyond the core components of the G60VX-RBBX05 we find some added extras as well. You can connect to the fastest available wireless networks with the laptop's integrated 802.11n Wi-Fi. A DVD drive is on board for watching your favorite movies as well as listening to and burning CDs.

A built-in 1.3-megapixel webcam and microphone allow you to video chat with friends over messaging services like Skype; the laptop also includes facial recognition software that allows you to log in to the computer without the need for a password for increased security. Finally, an 8-in-1 media card reader is included for quick transfers of data from devices such as digital cameras. The reader supports formats such as SD cards, Memory Sticks, and more.
