Asus G51J-3D Laptop and the Asus Eee PC 1005PE Netbook - Asus G51J-3D Features and Design

Other than its impressive core components, the Asus G51J-3D also comes packed with plenty more features to keep you satisfied. Integrated Wi-Fi is included so you can connect to available wireless networks on the go. The built-in DVD drive will let you listen to and burn CDs as well as watch DVDs. There's a 2-megapixel webcam and microphone that works well if you want to video chat with friends over services such as Skype.

For easy transfer of data with other devices such as digital cameras, an 8-in-1 media reader is included. The media reader supports formats such as SD cards, Memory Sticks, and more.

The highlight of the G51J-3D's extra features is without a doubt its 3D gaming capability. The G51J-3D incorporates Nvidia 3D Vision technology that allows you to play compatible video games in 3D for a more realistic and engaging gaming experience. Previously, if you wanted the luxury of experiencing Nvidia's 3D technology with a standard computer, you would have had to make several costly upgrades in terms of a special monitor and a capable graphics processor. Asus incorporated these elements into the G51J-3D, making it a pioneer of sorts in the 3D realm when dealing with Nvidia.

Asus also packages the G51J-3D with Nvidia 3D-Vision active shutter glasses and a wide-range infrared emitter to complete the entire 3D package. Of course, these special extras add quite a price premium to the G51J-3D, but if you really yearn for a machine capable of giving you 3D fun, then its worth it. Finishing off the extras provided by Asus are a gaming mouse and a gaming backpack.

The G51J-3D boasts a bit of an edgy look, as you would expect with a gaming-geared laptop. Most of its body is covered in a matte-black finish, with the exception of the glossy lid with a blue finish. The lid sports an aggressive pattern that surrounds the Asus logo. To help you further understand that its a gaming machine, "Asus Republic of Gamers" is stamped on the lid near the hinge. Portability is not the highest consideration with the G51J-3D, as it weighs 7.3 pounds and measures 14.8 inches wide by 10.4 inches deep by 1.6 inches thick.

Opening the lid reveals a 15.6-inch LED-backlit LCD with 1,366x768 resolution. A higher resolution would have been nice, but the display still produces nice graphics and color and does a good job when in use with the 3D technology. The integrated Altec Lansing speakers add good sound as well.

The keyboard has flat and wide keys that are comfortable for typing. A separate number pad is a nice touch. The keyboard also has adjustable illumination for use in dark environments. A well-sized touch pad complements the keyboard.

Rounding out the G51J-3D's design is its connectivity. The front houses the media reader, while the left side houses a VGA port, a FireWire port, an eSATA port, a HDMI port, and two USB ports. The right side houses the DVD drive, two more USB ports, and microphone and headphone jacks.

The Asus G51J-3D, while expensive, is worth its price tag for those who want the 3D gaming experience. It comes with all you need for such an experience, as well as a well-rounded feature set and excellent performance, sans the battery issues. If you are not so hot on 3D gaming, you may want to shop around for a cheaper alternative.
