Intel Presler 955: Benchmarking the First 65nm CPU - The Pentium D 955 EE Test Setup

The Pentium D 955 EE Test Setup

Now to the fun bits. Our test setups consisted of:

    Presler Setup

Intel Pentium Extreme Edition 955 (Presler) ES
    Asus P5WD2 Premium (MCH: 955X)
    2x 512MB Corsair PC5400UL
    BBA X1800XT

    Athlon Setup

    Athlon FX60
    A8N-SLI Deluxe
    2x512MB Crucial Ballistix
    BBA X1800XT

We first attempted cooling the Presler with a basic air cooler, the Zalman 9500.

But it didn't seem very suitable for the task. So we went to a basic liquid cooled setup.

One of the first things we noticed about the setup when moving to liquid was how hot the chipset and mosfets went. They really needed some form of active cooling, so we attached a small 40mm fan to the mosfet heatsink and a 70mm to the chipset. This seems to have solved these heat problems.

With this cooling, the CPU maxed at a healthy 41 degrees at stock speeds with full load on all 4 logical cores.
