Celeron D: the Little Processor that Could - WinRar, Doom 3
(Page 4 of 5 )
Time for some file compression. I used a folder weighing 198Mb, and containing 115 pictures. The folder was compressed with WinRar with normal compression setting.
The difference isn’t bad, but if you are compressing GBs of data, the time will add up. You should be backing up all the time ,and the time will add up. Once overclocked, the Celeron D passed the Pentium 4 by quite a lot.
Doom 3
Time for some gaming. Yeah, we do back up our data, but deep down we just want to game. Here is a real world benchmark, my favorite gaming benchmark, Doom 3. It is one of the most advanced games out there. It not only requires a fast video card, but a lot of fast RAM, and a beast of a CPU. From past testing for other articles, I noticed with a 6800, the game really becomes dependent upon the CPU power to get massive boosts in FPS. The Pentium 4s are the Intel gaming CPU, and the Celeron Ds are more budget, office CPUs. Let’s take a look to see whether the Celeron D can hold up to the brute force of Doom 3.
The Pentium 4 beats the Celeron D by 10 FPS at stock. The Celeron D did okay; it tried to keep up with the demands of Doom3, but the game requires just too much raw power from the CPU -- and the Celeron D wasn’t meant to deliver raw power. Once overclocked, it did pull ahead, but the results are spectacular for such high speeds.
