64 Bits and AMD, A Year Later - Chicken or Egg Syndrome

Why is that? Well, one reason is why on earth would you waste time compiling drivers for an OS that hasn't been officially released? It's kind of the "chicken or the egg" syndrome, of which one needs to come first? Microsoft with their release of Whistler years ago was excellent, because there no longer was the hell of driver support that had preceded it with Win98. I think they plan to continue that with this product... but because its user base realistically is so small, there isn't the same desire for companies to go out of their way to make drivers for 64 bit Windows.

Microsoft in turn, strangely looking out for their customers interest for once, don't seem to be interested in making people pay for a product with dodgy driver support at best integrated into it. While that's a good thing in one way, it's not good in that it's probably not inspiring any development for the platform.

And when we get down to it, development is what really needs to happen to cause this 64 bit stuff to jump from the shadows. To be honest, there is absolutely no reason to even bother with the number 64 for Joe Sixpack, until there is some "killer app" for it. Where is the application that actually makes use of the available 64 bit integer units, and as a result shows an appreciable performance increase? If there isn't one, what really is the reason for bothering?

While Joe ITGuy might very well appreciate having more than 4GB of memory to put into machines without a hack, or applying more than 3GB to one individual program, many consumers don't have a single gigabyte of RAM in their entire system. So you can't sell the product with that as your rallying cry to consumers outside of the server/workstation realm.
