Installing Hard Drives

This bottom hard drive bay is a little different. See the thumb screw on the bottom? I have to remove that first. Then notice the white plastic clip on the top. Hold that down and pull the drive bay out.
What is interesting is that you can keep this hard drive bay out and install your drives on the hinged metal panel to the left there. Why would you want to do this? Read on to see more details on this.
That white box you can see through the bay is the 80mm fan holder and filter you saw on the other side earlier. A fan there would blow right over your drives if you lave this drive cage in.

For your enjoyment, here’s a picture of me removing the drive cage.

The hard drive rails are different than those for the optical drives, but the principle is the same. You can see the pins in the picture above, and they fit into the screw holes of the drive.

This picture shows the drive with the rails on the side, sliding into the second HDD spot. You get a very good view of the notch on the rail here, and it’s lined up to slide into that square hole in the metal drive cage. Once it snaps in, you have to squeeze the rails together to pull it out. It’s very secure, even without screws.
After this, you just put the drive cage back into the case and use the thumb screw to hold it in tightly.
With all of this installed and our video cards plugged into the screwless slots, I connected the 6 billion wires for the front panel temperature and fan controller to the motherboard. I won’t bore you with those details, but you might be interested to see what we can do with the hinged metal panel and the front controller LCD and the case’s cooling performance.
