SilverStone TJ06 Computer Case Review - Conclusion

    SilverStone TJ06 Review

What I thought would be the coolest part of this case, besides its looks, was the wind tunnel. However, since it interfered with the Zalman cooler on the Radeon 9700 Pro, I tried it without the wind tunnel and liked it better that way. The motherboard was 5 degrees Celsius cooler without the wind tunnel and the CPU temperature only went up 1 degree!

BTX style cooling compartments on the SilverStone TJ06 work great. I applaud SilverStone for bringing this type of cooling to the ATX form factor. The three cooling zones work great. I have never seen a CPU run so coolly. There are a few problems to work out since the motherboards that will be used are designed for ATX and installing power and IDE cables will be a problem.

Another benefit of the SilverStone TJ06 is due to the inverted mounting of the motherboard. Typically the system's memory is at the top of the case behind the 5.25" drive bays without a fan in sight. In other enclosures, when removing memory from the system immediately after shutdown the memory is almost too hot to touch. The SilverStone TJ06's design puts the system's memory banks directly in front of the 120mm intake fan, keeping them cool to touch.

SilverStone is the new kid in the enclosure market. However, every enclosure produced by them so far has looked incredible. SilverStone has a great sense of style and functionality that goes into their cases. Their cases are solidly constructed, not flimsy like many cases on the market. And they do all this while keeping their cases very competitively priced. At the time of this writing the SilverStone TJ06 could be found at the SilverStone SST-TJ06 product page for a very reasonable $128. Considering the last two cases I've bought were were close to $200, the $128 for the TJ06 is outstanding.

    Pros

    • Styling, the case looks freakin' great
    • Great cooling performance, BTX-like design
    • Roomy with the right equipment
    • Front ports that are numerous and out of plain view
    • Tool-less
    • Support for dual CPU systems
    • Quiet

    Lows

    • It can't hold many popular motherboards, ABIT IC7-MAX3
    • Needs an ATX motherboard power cable extension for most power supplies
    • Needs to include extra long ATA and SATA cables
    • Incompatible with several VGA coolers

Thanks to Sundial Micro for providing this review sample.

       · I realize it's 3 yrs since this review came out but I have to say the ABit IC7 board...
