Project Sinister: Out Comes the Evil - More Plastic Surgery
(Page 5 of 7 )
Once the compound was dry I sanded it and smoothed flush with the side of the bezel before starting on the front. On the front, though, I still had to install the location for the power and reset switches. I removed the old housing for the switches from the plastic bezel that I had cut out earlier for the fans.

After marking out the size of the switch plate on the inside of the bezel with some grease pencil, I cut out the opening I needed to access the switches. Once the plastic of the bezel was cut to the right size I tested the opening with the switch plate and, satisfied, I attached the plate to the bezel with some more of the Plastic Surgery compound. Once the compound had dried I flipped over the bezel to do some exterior work.
I wasn’t planning on installing a floppy drive in this mod and decided that I wanted the front to have a smooth and polished finish. Additionally there were some gaps on either side of the USB bracket that needed to be filled and I wanted to finish the exterior of the switch plate. Using some more of the Plastic Surgery compound I applied several thin coats to the areas that needed work. I decided to fill in the seams around the floppy drive covers while I was at it, and I think that with that smooth surface on the front, the whole mod will really like sharp.

Once the rubbing compound had been allowed to cure overnight, I broke out the sanding papers and started to smooth it down. Mostly I only used a coarse 220 grit sand paper but I used very gentle strokes to carefully smooth down the Plastic Surgery compound. This was my first time using it, and I didn’t want to apply too much pressure lest the compound flake or peel off the plastic.

Once the sanding was finished I was left with very clean lines on the bezel and was looking forward to seeing how the paint would look on it. Now, regrettably, it was time to turn my attentions back to the side panel.
