Project Sinister: Once Upon a Midnight Dreary - Reassembling the Case Mod

The first thing I did was install the top panel and then the case handle. This was done to help strengthen the chassis against any flex or movement while I attached the side panel and suicide hinge.

Once the handle was installed I had to step back and admire the contrast between the gloss black of the top panel and the mat black finish of the chassis and case handle. I think it was an excellent color choice and if everything else looks as good as this I will be quite happy with the mod. I decided not to paint the screw heads for the bolts holding the case handle or the perforated steel on the side panel. The silver of the screw heads would tie in nicely with the original faux-chrome accents on the bezel and help to tie the whole package together.

The next step was to install all the fans, fan grills, and the green cold cathode fluorescent light. The front fans had radio controlled air plane spinners attached to them to help break up the square shape of the case. The points of the spinners would also help to contribute to the overall theme and inject a little bit of subtle malevolence to the mod.

With the cold cathode turned on the light shining through the perforations in the steel looked really cool through the fans. When the fans were spinning I wasn’t expecting much disruption in this effect as the speed at which the fans spin wouldn’t hinder the light shining through the perforations.
