Choosing the Right Case to Mod - Finding Mod-worthy Panels
(Page 3 of 4 )
Side and top panels are perhaps the most important features of any mod-worthy case. A great deal of cases come with pre-modded side windows, louvered air vents, existing blowholes for fans, screwless entry, and a multitude of other features. Ideally, the most mod-worthy case has none of these features. If these are features that you want to have on your mod it is often more satisfying, and respect-inducing, to add these yourself. The side panels and top panel should be as plain and uninteresting as possible to give you the blankest possible slate in your creative endeavors.
There is one important style of panel that should be rightly avoided when considering a mod: the one piece. This particular style, thankfully, hasn’t been seen for a few years but still exists out there where the side panels and top panel are all on piece of folded steel. This folded piece of steel can be extremely aggravating when attempting to create side windows or cutting designs. The folded nature of this low grade steel does not provide it much strength to resist further folding as you cut. Furthermore, this type of folded panel system can result in paint chipping and unnecessary scratching as you attempt to finish constructing the mod as they folded for a tight fit. It can be quite infuriating to witness your twenty hour paint finish ruined by a slight resistance on the chassis as you are just putting the finishing touch to your project.
When it comes to side panels of any sort, there is a good rule of thumb to consider before purchasing: if it doesn’t fit, don’t commit.
